Our Community
At Glen Iris Childcare and Kindergarten, we’re always excited to get involved with our local community. We regularly share special event notifications with our families, encouraging them to take part in local activities. One of our favourites has been partnering with the Boroondara Library for Wurundjeri Story Time. During these sessions, the children are introduced to Aboriginal Dreamtime stories and are taught some Aboriginal words, enriching their cultural understanding.
We also love welcoming the local Police to visit us annually. They talk to the children about road safety, the importance of holding hands when crossing streets, and how they can approach the Police for help if they ever feel lost. A highlight of the visit is when the children get to sit in the front seat of the Police car and turn on the lights. When the Police leave, they always make it extra special by turning on the sirens and lights for the kids to see and hear. It’s always an exciting experience for them!
Birthdays are another cause for celebration at the centre. We love coming together to bake cakes for the birthday parties (following our No Food from Home policy). The older children often take part in the baking process, which doubles as a fun cooking experience with their peers. The cakes are made with minimal sugar, and we ensure they meet the dietary requirements of all the children. Photos and videos of the celebration are shared with families through Seesaw, allowing everyone to enjoy the moment. If a child has siblings at the centre, they’re always invited to join in the fun too!
From time to time, we’re lucky enough to have a special furry visitor – Mel's dog, Khaleesi. Khaleesi is a Pugalier (a mix of Pug and Cavalier), and she absolutely loves spending time with the children. At over 10 years old, she’s a gentle soul who usually enjoys relaxing in the Office with Mel, though she’d much rather be playing with the children in the rooms and yards. She’s always kept on her lead for safety, and the educators ensure the children understand how to be safe around dogs. If they wish, the children can take turns holding Khaleesi’s lead and gently patting her. She brings so much joy to their day, and the children often ask Mel to bring her back soon!

There’s always an extra buzz in the air on dress-up days, with the children’s creativity shining through. The day is filled with fun games, activities, and plenty of opportunities for everyone to enjoy their chosen costumes. Whether it’s dressing as their favourite characters, animals, or superheroes, dress-up days are a great way to encourage imagination, creativity, and lots of laughter!
